ALICE'S NIGHT CIRCUS - Ask 6

HOW DID YOUR NAME ORIGINATE?

I'm a huge fan of Alice in Wonderland so Alice was the first name I wanted to go for but I knew I needed something a little more than just that. For quite a while I toyed with the idea of auditioning to sing for Cirque du Soleil because I'm a massive fan of their shows and the music but as life took me in a different direction I decided to pay a little homage to that part of my life by coming up with the concept of if there was a circus in Wonderland, what would it be like? I imagined it would be a much darker twist and would probably be completely unpredictable and came up with the idea of Alice's Night Circus.

WHERE WAS YOUR FIRST GIG AND HOW MANY PEOPLE WERE THERE?

My first gig as Alice's Night Circus was at the Lincoln Asylum Steampunk Festival, I sang a short set at the Fashion Show there underneath a martian tripod to a beautiful victorian assembly room full of the most incredibly dressed people. It was wonderful and absolutely terrifying because it was the first time anyone outside of the few people who had been listening to the music developing would hear it, but they were very supportive and it's just continued to grow since then!

WHEN WAS YOUR LAST DAY OFF AND WHAT DID YOU DO WITH IT?

I took a day off on Monday after a full weekend of performing and I did a little binge watching of Season 3 Stranger Things with a lovely cup of tea and my dog. It was lovely!

WHAT IS SOMETHING - APART FROM YOUR PHONE OR WALLET - THAT HAS TO BE IN YOUR VICINITY AT ALL TIMES?

My lip balm! I absolutely cannot live without my lip balm, but I'm terrible for popping them in pockets everywhere and then forgetting where they are so I end up with them scattered all over the place.

WHICH SONG BY ANOTHER ARTIST DO YOU WISH YOU'D WRITTEN?

There are quite a few songs that I really wish I'd written but the one that always pops into my mind when this question is asked is Delta Rae's Dance In The Graveyards. It's a beautiful song regarding the celebration of life and death and the video is really moving as well. It's absolutely one of those songs where I love the concept and the lyrics and really wish I'd come up with it first!

WHAT'S BEEN THE MOST SURREAL FAN MOMENT?

Being recognized in a bathroom while I was washing my hands and then again randomly in a car park. It's a very surreal thing when you're completely being yourself and going about your day-to-day life and someone asks if you're 'the girl from youtube?' or 'are you Alice?' and you realise they recognise you from the music! I don't think I'll ever quite get over that. It's also a little bit surreal when I do a signing and the queue goes all the way around and then out of the tent, in my head I'm just a singer and I sing my songs so it's always incredibly surprising to me when so many people turn out and will wait in line to get something signed or for a photo op! I'm always very honoured by that.
