MOONSHOT - Ask 6

HOW DID YOUR NAME ORIGINATE?

I’d love to give you some cool reason why we’re called Moonshot, but truth is I always had the name in my head for some random reason. It nestled in there when I was still a kid. Moonshot was my first imaginary band and when the band became a real thing the name came with us. No one else objected so it stuck.

WHERE WAS YOUR FIRST GIG AND HOW MANY PEOPLE WERE THERE?

It was at 12 Bar Club off Denmark Street so an awesome place to do a first gig. We harassed as many friends as we could into coming along so played to about 80 people. We were all so nervous. A friend thought she would help loosen us up by lifting up her shirt and give us a full on view of the ladies just before we kicked off. Sadly I think I was still a bit awkward despite the boob comedy relief. A few gigs later when the novelty had worn off for people who knew us, I think we played to about 10 people.

WHEN WAS YOUR LAST DAY OFF AND WHAT DID YOU DO WITH IT?

Actually it was today as it’s Easter Monday. Because the weather has been so amazing I ended up going to a National Trust place with family and friends. Not very rock and roll, but it was too nice to be inside (I can still hear my mum’s voice telling me that!) Lots of walking and the obligatory ice cream. What do you think ice cream van owners do for the rest of the year when the UK weather is pants?

WHAT IS SOMETHING APART FROM YOUR WALLET OR PHONE THAT HAS TO BE IN YOUR VICINITY AT ALL TIMES?

My headphones. I have a pair of those awesomely over-priced Bose noise cancelling headphones. Unfortunately there’s no going back to cheap headphones once you’ve got used to the sound quality. That said, they can be a bit hot in the summer so I have a smaller pair which are pretty good too. I’ve been known to have three to four pairs of headphones on me at any one time. The more music I’ve mixed the more fussy I’ve become about sound quality.

WHICH SONG BY ANOTHER ARTIST DO YOU WISH YOU HAD WRITTEN?

Scare Away the Dark by Passenger. It’s such a beautiful and hopeful song. The lyrics resonate with me so much. I particularly like the line:

“We're scared of drowning, flying and shooters But we're all slowly dying in front of f**king computers”

Yep, definitely wish I’d written this song. Also, Carolina in My Mind by James Taylor and Enjoy the Silence by Depeche Mode. How’s that for variety?

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST SURREAL FAN MOMENT?

The first time we got an email asking for a signed photograph of the band was pretty surreal. I thought it was a wind-up. A girl in Devon had heard one of our albums and wanted a memento. The other time that springs to mind is when we played some gigs in Russia. On the first night, we played a trendy club in Moscow and had gaggles of girls asking for our t-shirts and making come to bed eyes (and no, I’m pretty sure they weren’t pros! ☺) We were all good boys though – not least because our partners were with us ☺
