NEXT YEAR - Ask 6

HOW DID YOUR NAME ORIGINATE?

James Brown (Vocals/Guitar) - When the band first started out, my friend Chris was playing bass for a couple of months. We wrote loads of names down and they were all awful, some of them were song titles, some of them were word play. Next Year is one of my favourite Foo Fighters songs and Alex liked the name so we went with that.

WHERE WAS YOUR FIRST GIG AND HOW MANY PEOPLE WERE THERE?

Our first gig was our EP Launch show for ‘Resolutions’ held at a venue called ‘The Cookie” in Leicester. We had a turnout of about 100 people. The second one was better, it was at a local conservative club, about 5 mates came and the locals left when we started playing.

WHEN WAS YOUR LAST DAY OFF AND WHAT DID YOU DO WITH IT?

James Brown– If im not at work, playing guitar or gigging then im usually thinking of something Next Year related, I should probably have a days rest from time to time but I always just end up looking at videos of dogs and wasting a day.

George Fall (Guitar) – I work for myself so I always end up doing something work related. Thursday was pretty much a day off, I slept in and played guitar all day.

Jack Gutteridge (Bass) - My last day off was Sunday and I went opticians and had to pay 200 quid just to get to a decent standard of vision and then went and ruined my eyes some more by playing video games.

Alex Hurd (Drums) – not being a full time band I say our days off are our weekends where we aren’t playing shows, this one right now is the first in a while so I’m spending it with my daughter.

WHAT IS SOMETHING - APART FROM YOUR PHONE OR WALLET - THAT HAS TO BE IN YOUR VICINITY AT ALL TIMES?

George – Vape and Keys

James – I always have Carmex, a guitar pick and a tissue. I don’t remember the last time I left the house without any of those things. I have this complex that someone is going to ask me to play guitar or they’ll kill me. I wouldn’t want to do that with chapped lips or a runny nose.

Jack - I can't stress enough how much I need my glasses. I'm literally like Velma from Scooby Doo without them. Alex – I wear Doc Martens nearly everywhere, and when I dont wear them I have a pair in my car incase for some reason

-

WHICH SONG BY ANOTHER ARTIST DO YOU WISH YOU'D WRITTEN?

George – This Charming man – The Smiths

James – Either Everlong – Foo Fighters or Only In Dreams – Weezer

Jack - Probably something a bit rubbish but really popular like the Macarena. So I could live off the money from it but no one expects a lot from me afterwards. Alex – The Feel Good Song of the Year by No Use For A Name, the guitar riff in the intro, to the vocal melody, the harmonies and the general tempo of the song all work so well together, its an incredibly well written song, credits to Tony Sly the dude was a genius

-

WHAT'S BEEN THE MOST SURREAL FAN MOMENT?

George - We played a festival in Doncaster called ‘Glo’ where a couple walked about half an hour each way to a cash point to buy a shirt and CD from us, they asked us to sign the CD and get photos with us and stuff.

James – Last July we played ‘Glo Festival’ and when we finished this guy was talking to me saying he really loved our set and bought some merch and everything, then there were these 4 teenagers waiting behind him, probably like 15/16 years old. They were waiting to get a CD signed and seemed really nervous to meet me, but I think I was far more nervous to meet them. Then I looked at Alex and George and they were signing drumsticks and stuff for some other people. It was so weird. Then I got a muffin.

Jack - Probably when Alex and I went to see Reel Big Fish. Someone recognised him as being from the band and I had to stand there and they didn't even say hello to me. Alex – We’ve had the usual can we have a picture with you etc, but for me was when a stick I broke ended up in the crowd and someone came to me with it afterwards and asked me to sign it.
