Smiling Assassin - Ask 6

HOW DID YOUR NAME ORIGINATE?

Robbie Johnson (Drummer) - Well I guess we’ve all been through some pretty cruddy times and had experiences with being “stabbed in the back”. George (vocalist) once described a ‘Smiling Assassin’ to me as someone who's all friendly and smiling to your face but is totally two faced and would screw you over in a heartbeat. The name just kind of stuck from there.

-

WHERE WAS YOUR FIRST GIG AND HOW MANY PEOPLE WERE THERE?

Robbie Johnson (Drummer) – It was back in 2019 at The New Adelphi Club in Hull, there were about 30 people there… our only fan at that time was probably my mum.

-

WHEN WAS YOUR LAST DAY OFF AND WHAT DID YOU DO WITH IT?

Josh Rogerson (Guitarist) - My last proper day off was a couple of weeks ago before the world began to end, I'm pretty sure I'd spent it practicing guitar and screaming at other gamers. As a band our last day off was a few days after filming the music video for Coping. That was spent finalizing stuff for the single/music video release, so in reality, we haven't had a day off for quite some time!

-

WHAT IS SOMETHING - APART FROM YOUR PHONE OR WALLET - THAT HAS TO BE IN YOUR VICINITY AT ALL TIMES?

George (Vocalist) - There's not a lot I have to have on my person. I don't really even care about my phone or wallet. No one talks to me and I have no money. If I had to choose it would be my keys in case I have to take my necklace off.

-

WHICH SONG BY ANOTHER ARTIST DO YOU WISH YOU'D WRITTEN?

George Garnett (Vocalist) - A song I wish I had written is ‘kids of the black hole’ by Adolescents. The lyrics and melodies just get better every time I hear that song.

-

WHAT'S BEEN THE MOST SURREAL FAN MOMENT?

Casey Stead (Bassist) - Being asking to play a fans house party for what was only our third show, and seeing people crowd surf across a packed-out living room. It was nuts!

Working in digital media across the UK, I spend hours evaluating the seamless navigation of fast platforms like Chicken Road Casino for my research. It’s highly technical work. Reading this piece on Smiling Assassin is the perfect escape! I love diving into the raw energy of the UK underground music scene. Their sound is so authentic and the questions in this interview really reveal their creative drive. Great read!
